What’s in Your Folder?

On my mother-in-law Sandy’s wall, there’s a sign that says, “Do one thing every day that makes you happy.” Other than giving me permission to eat gnocchi every day, this inspires me to go a little deeper than pleasing my tongue and tummy every day with tiny potato dumplings.

After I crawl out of bed, I grab my laptop and visit a folder on my desktop labeled “Good morning.” It contains subfolders that categorize those things that “make me happy.” One is a folder for video clips, like the one of a woman living life unabashed, calling down heaven. And one of me playing with my grandpup, Silas. And the one of the little curly-haired Jessica standing on her bathroom sink doing her daily affirmations. Another folder is for documents, copied and pasted quotes, things like “The Serenity Prayer,” other inspirational words, and lists. On one list is “Pray, write 3-5 things you’re thankful for, etc.” There is another folder that contains music, like the song by my friend Tiffany who recorded it just for me because I begged asked her to, and because she lives life unabashed. Another folder is for images and graphics. Like the meme that has a quote by Buddha, “The trouble is, you think you have time.”

I try and open the good morning folder every day, although sometimes I miss. I’ve noticed an unmistakable contrast in my day when I don’t take time to do one thing that makes me happy every day.
