The other day I blogged about yelling to get someone’s attention and I said don’t do it. https://pamelacapone.com/2018/02/thoughts-prayers-policy-change/ This was too broad. There are exceptions. Like Emma Gonzalez, for obvious reasons. Like so many others she’s earned the right.
I woke up this morning and saw this John Kasich clip and I feel so fired up. So here I am again. For the record, I might be yelling inside.
It’s the all-or-nothing thinking that has gotten so many children killed. Too rough? I don’t think so.
I recently discovered Brooke Castillo. She’s the bomb. She’s fired me up. That said, I don’t agree with everything she says. That’s okay because I doubt she’d agree with everything I say. Again, that whole not all or nothing.
If you have a few minutes, check out this episode about confirmation bias. Skip the intro and go to the 4:30 mark where she starts with “Today, though, we are going to talk about the concept of confirmation bias.” https://thelifecoachschool.com/202/ Confirmation bias can be deadly.
Since the Florida shooting, I’ve seen the same meme in my newsfeed a few times (and several like it). It’s the one with the photo of the gun rack in the back window of the pick-up truck. It says, “When I was in high school we had gun racks in trucks, etc. Goes on to try and make the point that because that was true and there were no shootings back then, that we do not have a gun problem, we have a sin problem, we have a lack of heart and soul problem, etc.” In my opinion, this is the problem: All or nothing thinking. Why can’t we have a gun problem AND a heart and soul problem? If we have a heart and soul problem, it figures that we also have a gun problem. All or nothing thinking is killing us. Literally.
BEFORE I listened to the confirmation bias podcast yesterday, I posted this comment on Facebook. The first line is mine, the second Warren Buffet’s:
Some of the most powerful, life/world altering things are the simplest in theory, but hardest to truly embrace–Like an open mind.
“What the human being is best at doing is interpreting all new information so that their prior conclusions remain intact.” —Warren Buffet
Digging your heals into a muddy position you’ve held for years simply because you don’t want to appear weak only makes you weak. An open mind is strength. My strong, yet imperfect mind told me that I needed to adjust my statement about never yelling your position. Like John Kasich and especially like Emma Gonzalez, sometimes it’s time to yell.
