“Only to the extent that we expose ourselves over and over to annihilation can that which is indestructible be found in us.” ―Pema Chödrön.
Wild Abandon
She was abandonable
and a quick study
learning the art of DIY
she joined the others
glanced back at the little girl
and waved goodbye
She swallowed hard the bitter
hoped it would become sweet
she got so used to the sour
the taste was both trick and treat
Strange men on the sidewalk said
“You’re prettier when you smile”
so she made herself prettier
in her belly, bile
It’s fine to betray your self
she thought
but never, ever your face
give the people what they want
and maybe you’ll find your place
She checked her list
Could recite it in a pinch:
Be nice—be kind—be of service—don’t make waves—don’t whine—it’s all on you—be the bigger person—set the tone—they go low, you go high—do the right thing—don’t cry—take the high road—they’ll come around
She saw that they never did
So, she decided
With wild abandon
To choose herself
And be found.
