Varroommm with a View

 

 

You are what you eat.

 

You are what you do.

 

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.*

 

You are what you think about.

 

 

We may not all agree on these statements about personal responsibility. For example, there are at least a couple ways to look at, “You are what you do.” And the arguments are strong. For now, let’s look at “You are what you think about.”

 

Mind management teachers and proponents of being more conscious of our thoughts make a powerful case. Teachers and authors like Brooke Castillo and Mark Manson have lit light bulbs over my head about a frigillion times. I hope my teeny bulbs don’t fade because these tiny illuminated suckers have made me more awake lately. Awake=good.

 

I believe our thoughts do create our reality.

 

Yesterday I pulled up behind a red Ferrari on a Newport Beach boulevard. That car couldn’t have been a shinier, more pristine and glorious vibrant red and it had that distinctive, shockingly beautiful Varroommm sound. I grabbed my iPhone and brazenly snapped a photo, and I think the driver caught me in his rear view, seeing me steal an image.

 

The light turned green and he stepped on the pedal demonstrating the power, showing off, pushing it. I didn’t mind at all.  As he approached the next red light, he slowed, changing lanes to my right, as if deliberately giving me a chance to creep up and get a shot at full view of the glory. On cue, I pulled up along side in my humble-ish, six-speed red Mini Cooper. I took a big gulp and drank it it in. If he’d turn to look, I had my thumbs-up on the trigger ready to go. I didn’t care. I was all in.

 

Even from first glance a mile or so back, I was transported to Italy and the few moments I had my chance to drive one of these exceptional beauties. The words, Not everyone has driven a Ferrari, Pam, lit up a bulb.

 

Now there’s something to think about, to dwell on. You’ve gotten a little stuck on the rough road you’ve been down lately—and for good reason–but remember the Varroommm. You’ve had your share of roundabouts, but don’t forget the extraordinary blessings.

 

I not only got to experience the Varroommm, but a Varroommm with a view—Italy, no less.

 

Think about such things.

 

I thought of Philippians 4:8* and if that ain’t a call to manage your mind, I don’t know what is.  Mind matters, so mind your mind. Mind your matter(s).

 

 

In the attached YouTube, you can hear my Italian driving instructor tell me to “push.” He said it the first time and I knew the translation. That meant to push the pedal, step on it, give that baby some gas, feel the power, see what life can do. Even if it’s bumpy, push, Pamela.

 

Push forward.
